Shatter Messiah: God Burns Like Flesh

Nach dem sehr starken Debut „Never To Play the Servant” steht nun der Nachfolger “God Burns Like Flesh” in den Regalen. Nachdem der Erstling bei mir schon sehr hoch punkten konnte, war ich natürlich schon sehr gespannt auf die neue Scheibe. Ein erster Blick zeigt erstmal eine mit nur 8 Titeln im Vergleich zum Debut (14 Titel) recht spärliche Songliste. Aber es sollte mich nicht wundern, wenn diese Meister an ihren Instrumenten mal ein paar richtig lange Hymnen fabriziert hätten.

Kräftig legt „Idolator“ los und entfacht erstmal richtig Druck. Ja, der Stilmischmasch aus Nevermore und Annihilator ist bestehen geblieben. Dies ist aber erstmal auch nicht schlimm, da die Band sich auf höchstem technischen Niveau bewegt. Unglaublich, dass Curran Murphy bei den genannten Bands immer etwas im Hintergrund hinter Jeff Waters und Jeff Loomis gestanden hat. Trotzdem verzettelt sich der Song irgendwie nach ein paar Minuten im Mittelmaß, da helfen auch die besten Instrumentalparts nichts, wenn der Song als solches nicht zündet.

Dann kommt aber wie auch schon beim Debut mit dem Titelsong das Highlight der Scheibe: „God Burns Like Flesh“. Ebenso wie eigentlich jeder Song sehr ausgefeilt komplex, aber hier gefällt jeder Part und von Langeweile ist auch nach dem zigsten Durchlauf nichts zu bemerken. Greg Wagner variiert seine Stimme und sorgt für gespitzte Ohren. Deutlich langsamer geht’s im zweiten Teil des Songs von statten, wiederum mit Gregs tollen Vocals als Sahnehäubchen garniert.

Da zu langsame Melodien nun wirklich nicht das Ding der Band sind, geht es dann auch wieder deutlich zügiger zu beim dritten Song namens „Pathway“. Lediglich beim Refrain wird kräftig an der Handbremse gezogen. Irgendwie schon interessant und keinesfalls schlecht, aber irgendwie fehlt mir hier die Initialzündung, zu sehr hat doch das Debut verwöhnt. „Stripped Of Faith“ rauscht leider auch trotz des tollen spielerischen Könnens ein wenig am Ohr vorbei. An Drummer Robert Falzono und Bassist Jason Chamberlain liegt es sicher nicht, aber irgendwie wirken die Songs teilweise schon ein wenig zu progressiv angehaucht, welches in dem Thrash / Power / Prog / Goth / Core Geflecht schon ein wenig zu viel Aufmerksamkeit verlangt, um alle Ideen zu ergründen, denn dafür ist der Härtegrad zu hoch, welcher eben auch immer wieder zum Haupthaarschütteln einlädt. Okay, Nevermore können das auch, aber der Sound hier ist moderner und weitaus in sich verschachtelter ausgefallen.

„Dirge Of The Christ“ ist da schon deutlich gefälliger für die Ohren. Schön, dass hier die Stimmungskurve wieder stärker nach oben zeigt. Der Song ist zwar instrumental auch sehr beladen, aber in sich deutlich eingängiger. Das wahnsinnig gute Gitarrensolo steuert sein Scherflein dazu, dass man hier von einem weiteren kleinen Höhepunkt sprechen kann.

„Buried In Black“ hämmert sich im groovigen Uptempo durch die Lautsprecher. Dusty Holt an der Gitarre zeigt, dass auch er ein gutes Stück zum hohen Level der Band beitragen kann. Trotzdem fehlt mir auch hier das gewisse Etwas, welches den Song zu etwas Besonderem macht. Das gleiche Missgeschick liegt dann auch bei „This Is The Day“ vor. Greg schreit sich fast schon verzweifelt die Stimmbänder aus dem Leib, aber so richtig Stimmung will nicht aufkommen, gerade weil man noch Songs wie „Never To Play the Servant“, „All Sainted Sinners“, „Deny God“ und „New Kleen Killing Machine“ vom Debut im Hinterkopf hat.

Mit großer Sorge schaut man auf die Uhr und liegt gerade mal bei 37 / 38 Minuten, als der letzte Song ertönt. Und das im Zeitalter der CD, das Debut hatte ja wenigstens noch knappe 60 Minuten und 14 Stücke. Nun ja, die gute Nachricht ist, dass der letzte Song etwas länger geraten ist. Fast schon wie ein kleines Monumentalwerk kommt „Tomorrow Immortal“ daher, das Ganze aber mit Sicht auf die genannten Stile. Ein wirklich krönender Abschluss, der sogar balladeske Töne anschlägt, wenngleich mich der Gesang hier nicht so hundertprozentig zu überzeugen vermag.

Fazit: Nach dem sehr starken Debut leider eine zwar deutlich schlechtere Scheibe, welche aber immer noch als starkes Album zu bewerten ist. Vielleicht waren meine persönlichen Erwartungen an das Nachfolgewerk zu hoch. Aber nach dem starken Debut eine doch eher durchwachsen recht kurze Scheibe abzuliefern, zeigt eigentlich, dass man sich doch lieber noch ein paar Monate mehr Zeit hätte nehmen sollen um das Werk zu vollenden. Jetzt heißt es für das dritte Album : Make it or break it.

Etwas mehr als ein Jahr nach dem Debüt “Never To Play The Servant” präsentiert uns die Band um Curran Murphy (ex NEVERMORE) und Robert Falzano (ex ANNIHILATOR) die zweite Langrille.

Regierten auf dem Debüt noch einige enge Vergleiche zu den Stammbands, können sich SHATTER MESSIAH auf „God Burns Like Flesh“ wieder ein Stück aus dem Schatten entfernen und ihrem ganz eigenen Stil widmen. Natürlich kann ein Gitarrist nur bedingt sein Spiel ändern, was man auch auf „God Burns Like Flesh“ gut hören kann. Murphys Gitarrensound klingt nun mal immer ein wenig wie NEVERMORE. Das ist aber auch gar nicht schlimm, da NEVERMORE nun mal eine geile Band ist. Aber Greg Wagner bringt durch seinen eigenständigen und markanten Gesangsstil jegliche Vergleiche zu den eben genannten Bands ins wanken. Diese unverwechselbare Stimme passt sich hervorragend zum Stil der Combo an, ohne dabei aufgesetzt zu klingen.

Die Tracks auf „God Burns Like Flesh“ sind ausgeglichen, abwechslungsreich und gut durchdacht bzw. arrangiert. Checkt nur mal die Songs „Idolator“, „God Burns Like Flesh 1 & 2“, das brachiale „Pathway“ (ein absoluter Nackenbrecher!), das moderne „Dirge Of The Christ“ oder „Tomorrow Immortal“. Keine Ausfälle, lediglich hochkarätige Tracks. Vor allem „Tomorrow Immortal“ kann besonders punkten, das Stück ist einfach nur cool.

Über Sound und Produktion brauche ich wohl keine Worte zu verlieren. Druckvoll, differenziert und nahezu glasklar.

Fans werden natürlich nicht enttäuscht, aber auch Anhänger von NEVERMORE sollten mal ein Öhrchen riskieren, wenn sie dies nicht schon getan haben. Zwar ist „God Burns Like Flesh“ kein richtiger Überflieger, aber eine durchaus gutklassige, solide Platte, die auch nach mehreren Durchläufen nicht langweilig wird, im Gegenteil, es gibt immer wieder etwas zu entdecken.

Quizfrage: was kommt dabei heraus, wenn sich Curran Murphy (Tourmember Nevermore & Annihilator) und Greg Wagner (Breaker & Archetype) zusammen tun und eine CD aufnehmen? Richtig: ein tolles Album mit einem weitreichendem Spektrum vieler Metalspielarten.
Aber der Reihe nach: Ohne Vorwarnung startet „Never To Play The Servant“ wie ein Song, welcher auch auf Judas Priest`s Painkiller hätte stehen können. Hammer, was da abgeht, dann der Break und der Refrain. Dieser setzte sich bei mir schon im ersten Durchgang im Kopf fest. Absolut tolle Gitarren von Curran Murphy und Dusty Holt gepaart mit Robert Falzano`s Doublebassdrumattacken, welche auch Ron Boisverts Bass dementsprechend rotieren lassen.
Direkt weiter geht`s mit bestem Thrash Metal, welcher allerdings schon ein paar Durchgänge brauchte, bis er mich überzeugen konnte. „Cruzify Freedom“ heißt diese Powerattacke. Fliegende Gitarren auf hohem technischen Niveau, wie man es von Annihilator gewohnt ist.
Hier freut sich die Nackenmuskulatur des Headbangers.
„Fratility“ ist dann auch der erste Song, der nicht wie mittendrin anfängt. Der Song kommt dank der harten, aber nicht schnellen Guitar/Bass/Drum Maschienerie etwas sperrig rüber, aber absolut cool.
„Hatred Devine“ zeigt dann wieder, warum es wichtig ist, einen guten powervollen Drummer im Rücken zu haben. Greg Wagner zeigt einen großen Teil seines Könnens, in dem er hohe Screams, fast schon Growls und melodischen cleanen Background zelebriert. „Fear To Succeed“ haut einem dann schon wieder den Kopf weg: Thrash Metal vom feinsten mit einem extra Schuß Aggression. Insgesamt ist der Sound richtig schön brachial fett geworden.
„All Sainted Sinners“ ist dann nach „Never To Play The Servant“ mein zweiter großer Favorit dieses Albums. Langsamer getragener Heavy Metal mit eingängigen Vocals paaren sich mit Power/ Speed Metal Attacken.
„Inflicted“ bolzt dann erstmal wieder extrem los. Danach wird es wieder etwas langsamer mit dem tollen „Drinking Joy“. Dieser Song hat wieder alles, was sich der moderne Heavy Metal Head wünscht: Doublebassdrums, hasserfüllten Gesang, cleanen Gesang, geniale Gitarren und Bässe. In den ruhigeren Parts des Songs könnte man sich glatt Meat Loaf vorstellen, so wie er sich besser entwickelt hätte ;-).
„Bad Blood“ ist dahingegen schon wieder eine Hassattacke. Greg Wagner schreit sich die Stimmbänder aus dem Rachen. Der zehnte Song hört auf den Namen „Blasphemy Feeder“ und hätte durchaus auch aus der Feder von Nevermore stammen können.
„Deny God“ ist ein weiterer Höhepunkt, der mal wieder zeigt, wie der Heavy Metal der NWOBHM heutzutage klingen muß. „Disillusion“ lässt, wie eigentlich alle Songs, kein bißchen Härte vermissen. „Bleed to Shadows“ kann den hohen Standart der Scheibe leider nicht ganz halten. Nun kann ich nur hoffen, daß zum Abschluß nach den beiden letzten Songs noch ein Kracher wartet.
Und, was soll ich schreiben, mein Wunsch wird erhört. „New Kleen Killing Machine“ kommt zwar etwas langsamer, aber dennoch mit wuchtigen Doublebassdrums daher. Ein absolut gelungener Abschluß des fast 60-minütigen Debüts.

Fazit: wir bekommen hier ein technisch absolut perfektes Album mit einer gehörigen Portion Härte vorgesetzt, welches keine Vergleiche zu scheuen braucht. Beim ersten Durchlauf des Albums hatte ich vereinzelt noch Probleme mit einigen Songs, da die Stilunterschiede von Song zu Song nicht so schnell in meinen Kopf wollten. Aber genau dies garantierte, dass ich auch nach mittlerweile über 20 Durchläufen immer noch einen Heidenspaß an der Scheibe habe. Toll, was hier abgeliefert wurde. Ich bin schon gespannt, wie diese Band live einschlagen wird. Glaubt mir, von Shatter Messiah werden wir noch viel (Gutes) hören.

With security, because there are not new projects in the Metalszene such as sand at the sea, particularly since most sound only too on the average from the boxes. After the first hearing passage of Shatter Messiahs debut album one must revise its opinion however already soon. Ordered thrashlastiger power Metal is extremely variedly played, that is fönt each listener first times the greasy hair from the face. The fast, opening title TRACK is already involved properly forward and loads from the first second to the carrot vibrating in. Heart of Shatter Messiah is however a singer Greg Wagner, who already provided with Breaker and ark type for attention, and on „Never ton play delivers the Servant “its masterpiece. All the same whether Gegrunze, shouting or correct singing, the man sing everything without problems. In addition come still the outstanding guitar play of Curran Murphy, a balanced Songwriting as well as a correctly fat production. Now and then one hears also the past of Murphy (particularly with strongly „the Blasphemy Feeder reminding of Nevermore “), which might address above all fans of the former employers. Whom too little this year in the Thrash Metal or harder power Metal was ordered, „Never ton will incorporate play the Servant “after the first hearing passage into the Top 20 of the yearly 2006. One should keep Shatter Messiah in the eye! You get first impressions of the sound with an attendance of the My space side that volume.

After stepping out of the shadows of such bands as Annihilator and Nevermore, guitarist Curran Murphy now releases the debut of his new band, Shatter Messiah. Never to Play the Servant really shows off the impressive guitar work of Murphy, which works well together with the vocal talents of former Archetype front man Greg Wagner. He kind of reminds me of a cross between Rob Halford and Ron Rinehart (Dark Angel). Shatter Messiahs actual sound is a viciously intense combination of Curran Murphys technical metal roots and classic heavy thrash. Besides the general heaviness of the album, there is also a modern Prog feel to it at times that really keeps you entertained throughout the 14 tracks. Shatter Messiah are an obviously highly skilled, technical and proficient
band, and Never to Play the Servant shows us just how good they are. If youre into classic thrash, with a modern, heavy edge to it, check out Shatter Messiah for size.

Finally Curran Murphy and SHATTER MESSIAH have returned !!! On August 28th 2006 their first full-length album Never Play The Servant will be released. And it will be an enormous strike ! Guess you all know Curran Murphy due to his guitar engagements for NEVERMORE and ANNIHILATOR. Now he leaves the long shadows of the aforementioned bands with a giant leap. Within almost an hour playing-time he combines all the good characteristics of those two bands but nevertheless creates a new and original sound being an evil and intense mixture of ultra-aggressive Thrash and Melodic Metal. But its not only Curran Murphys guitar work that makes this album outstanding, the vocals of Greg Wags Wagner (former ARCHETYPE,BREAKER) are pure insanity. I never would have believed this guy being capable of such a wide vocal range. On one hand he shouts very aggressively (Fear To Succeed) while on the other (All Sainted Sinners; just one song later) he resembles David Wayne (METAL CHURCH, REVEREND) who unfortunately has left us much too early. This release is for those being into outfits like TWELFTH GATE, NEVERMORE etc. but METAL CHURCH followers should also give it a try. Actually its for every Metal fanatic who wears no blinkers.

SHATTER MESSIAH - further volume in these days debütiert. With „Never ton of Play The Servant “emancipated itself guitar God Curran Murphy of its predecessor of volume ANNIHILATOR and NEVERMORE. Likewise also with it Drummer Rob Falzano is, that likewise before with the latter sticks momentum. Curran shears in such a way which like a small Metal Allstar volume around itself, because also no smaller than Greg „Wags “Wagner, who already sang before with BREAKER and ARK TYPE, stands with SHATTER MESSIAH at the microphone. Ron Biosvert at the bass and Dust gets at the second guitar complements the whole.

If one thinks due to the volume hierarchy now that „Never ton of Play The Servant is aligned by Curran “alone to the guitar play, one errs, because also Falzano hardly yields with the foot of the gas and/or Kickdrum pedal and shows already with the Opener of the same name that on „Never tons of Play The Servant “equivalent musicians stood in the Studio. The speed is dargeboten here in the first few minutes, is quite impressing, also the Drumming Falzanos pleases. The SHATTER MESIAH debut does not captivate however alone by these characteristics, it is primarily an interaction of the most diverse influences and passingnesses, which bring along the musicians, everyone for itself alone. Thus tons of Play The Servant meet “above all Thrash parts on Gothic of elements on „Never. 15 TRACKs, which are very varied every now and then and get along also times without key boards.

For category fans a genuinly hear-worth Powermetal disk with part melodiösen, in addition, by sections more aggressive parts. Very much US-Metal affin. Friends the volume, where our Protagonisten participated already before, might find also their joy here.

After some years as an official of guitar with Nevermore and Annihilator Curran Murphy saw the time come to carry out own ideas. It already, was only missing the volume had Songs. Those it geschart meanwhile around itself. Now it wants us with Shatter Messiah the langhaarigen carrots wegpusten.

With “Never ton of Play The Servant” it supplies equivalent times the best beginning in addition. Here full of seeds power Metal meets merciless Thrash Metal clubs, paired with some hard core influences. From Judas praised up to Slayer finds one so some references, despite everything sounds very independent the debut. Curran Murphy puts a thought out Songwriting to the day, which strikes into a rather progressive notch.

There does the past play with Nevermore also purely? Its musicians take part in that at least sovereign. Aggressive Geschredder and distorted guitars break through dramatic melody elbows. Bevel and dark sounds like Drums with double bass parts, also driving, determine the sound. After that terribly and morbide seeming “Fratility” open “have-talk Devine” with modern reef, “Wags” gargles and grunzt themselves with his friction iron voice by the Song.

Shatter Messiah pull this concept through of the incalculability over sixty minutes long. Destructive Thrash Sons alternates with neck-breaking power Metal TRACKs. “Fear ton of Succeed” exhibits or other hard core impact. “Universe Sainted Sinners” captivates also in-usual melody, while “new Kleen Killing Machine” is exactly that, which the title promises. With “Drinking Joy” and “Deny God” again calmer and schwermütige Song appeared themselves, which are interrupted by harder parts. “Disillusion” however is terribly turned off and errs sounding TRACKs, on which the voice of the singer moves almost unbelievably between pressed Krei and deep singing.

Curran took itself with the Songwriting simply, which fit him straight into the concept. Without consideration for any classifications. The result is a strong like also exciting, urgent and incalculable album. With such a killer debut may one on the successor be strained already!

But in sequence: Without preliminary warning „Never ton Play The Servant starts “like a Song, which on Judas praised `s Painkiller have stood could. Altogether the sound became correctly beautifully brachial fat.
„Universe Sainted Sinners “is then after „Never ton of Play The Servant “my second large favorite of this album. Slow carried Heavy Metal also in-usual Vocals pair themselves with power speed Metal attacks.
„Inflicted “bolzt then first times again extremely loosely. Afterwards it becomes again somewhat slower with the mad „Drinking Joy “. This Song has again everything that the modern Heavy Metal Head wishes itself: Doublebassdrums, hate-fulfilled singing, cleanen singing, ingenious guitars and basses. In the calmer parts of the Songs one could present smoothly Meat Loaf, as he would have better developed; -).
„Bath Blood “is there against already again a hate attack. Greg Wagner walk yourself the vocal cords from the throat. The tenth Song hears could have originated on the names „Blasphemy Feeder “and quite also from the feather/spring from Nevermore.
„Deny God “is a further high point, which shows times again, how the Heavy Metal of the NWOBHM must sound nowadays. „Disillusion “leaves, as all Songs, no little hardness to actually miss. „Bleed ton of Shadows “can keep the high kind of condition of the disk unfortunately not whole. Now I can only hope that to the conclusion after the two last Songs still another Kracher waits.
And, which I am to write, my desire erhört. „New Kleen Killing Machine “comes along somewhat more slowly, but nevertheless with wuchtigen Doublebassdrums. An absolutely successful conclusion nearly of the 60-minütigen debut.

Result: we get here a technically absolutely perfect album with a due portion of hardness set forward, which does not need to shrink from comparisons. With the first run of the album I had isolated still problems with some Songs, since the style differences from Song to Song did not want so fast into my head. But exactly this guaranteed that I have a heath fun at the disk also after meanwhile over 20 runs still. Madly, which was delivered here. I am already strained, as this volume will hit live. Believes will hear me, of Shatter Messiah we still much (property).

Yeah! Das tritt Arsch! Schon der Opener „Never To Play“ zeigt deutlich die Marschrichtung der neuen Band um Ausnahme-Gitarrist Curran Murphy, bekannt von NEVERMORE oder ANNIHILATOR. Konnte er bei den eben genannten Bands nicht immer seinen kreativen Adern freien Lauf lassen, so vollzieht er dies nun bei SHATTER MESSIAH. Das neue Album Never To Play The Servant umfasst so ziemlich alle Stile, die im Metal zu finden sind ohne dabei jedoch die Basis, den Thrash Metal, völlig aus den Augen zu verlieren. Dies zeigt sich ebenfalls beim Oberhammer „Crucify Freedom“, welcher mit Lichtgeschwindigkeit aus dem Boxen knallt und alles niederwälzt. Eine Nummer stampfender ist „Fratility“ ausgefallen, zu dem man wunderschön die Mähne und die Rübe schütteln kann. Klasse. „Hatred Devine“ kommt eine Ecke brachialer daher, bei dem Sangesgott Greg „Wags“ Wagner all seinen Zorn rauslassen kann. Das Gaspedal schön durchgetreten haben die Jungs ebenfalls bei „Fear To Suceed“ während „All Sainted Sinners“ facettenreicher und mit einer Menge Hooklines ausgestattet ist. Gesanglich erinnert dieser Song teilweise an Tim „Ripper“ Owens, was ihm einen besonderen Charme zukommen lässt. Speed Metal der ersten Klasse findet sich in der Nummer „Inflicted“ wieder. Gekonnt wird der Headbanger durch den Midtempotrack „Drinking Joy“ wieder auf den Boden der Tatsachen zurückgeholt. Weiterer Anspieltipp des Albums ist definitiv „Bad Blood“. Ein gnadenloser Brecher mit Hitcharakter, der besonders live gut rüberkommen sollte. Ganz klar NEVERMORE ist im Song „Blasphemy Feeder“ zu hören, gewollt oder ungewollt. Nichts desto trotz eine klasse Nummer, die besonders den Fans von Warrel Dane und Co. gefallen wird. Eine Spur besinnlicher ist „Deny God“ geworden. Hier zeigt Greg, dass er neben seinen harten Vocals auch durchaus mit sehr viel Gefühl singen kann. „Disillusion“ ist etwas verspielter und vertrackter als der Rest des Albums, teilweise fast schon progressiv ausgefallen während „Bleed The Shadows“ wieder erdiger und stampfender ans Tageslicht kommt und besonders durch die Rhythmusfraktion zu überzeugen weiß. Cool. Beim finalen Stück „New Kleen Killing Machine“ macht sich erneut der Wahnsinn breit. Hier treffen wieder die Roots von NEVERMORE bzw. auch SANCTUARY aufeinander, was dem Song besonders gut zu Gesicht steht. Besonders der Refrain hat es in sich und zieht einen sofort in seinen Bann.
Die Mannen um Curran Murphy haben ein wirklich starkes Debüt vorgelegt, welches hoffentlich aus dem Schatten des Undergrounds herausstechen wird. Das Zeug dafür hat dieser Silberling auf jeden Fall.

Der Name Curran Murphy sollte einigen Metalheads was sagen, schließlich spielte er bei ANNIHILATOR (zu Waking The Fury, Double Live Annihilation und All For You-Zeiten) und bei NEVERMORE (in der Politics Of Ecstasy und Dead Heart In A Dead World-Phase). Jetzt hat der gute Murphy die Schnauze voll, nur anderen Herren zu dienen und startet seine eigene Band. Und vor dieser Band müssen sich seine ehemaligen Arbeitgeber mächtig gewaltig in Acht nehmen! Auf der Scheibe bekommt ihr alles, was die anderen Bands ausmacht: Power, Melodie und geniale Songs. Dazu kommt Murphys Gitarrenkunst, die sich vor ANNIHILATOR-Boss Jeff Waters nicht im geringsten zu verstecken braucht. Sänger Greg Wagner ist ein wahrer Teufelsshouter, der aber auch melodiöse Parts mit Bravour zu meistern vermag. Aber ein bloßer Abklatsch der ex-Bands ist SHATTER MESSIAH bei aller Liebe nicht! Der thrashige Anteil ist sehr hoch und wechselt geschickt mit fiesen Midtempoparts und wunderbaren Gitarrensoli. Die Songs stecken voller Energie und brettern euch um die Ohren, dass ihr nur noch mit selbigen schlackern könnt.
Anspieltipps sind defintiv: Never To Play, Fratality (geil melodisch), Inflicted, Bad Blood oder New Kleen Killing Machine. Jeder, der auf heftigen und fast schon perfekten Power/Thrash Metal steht, sollte hier unbedingt zuschlagen!

Shatter Messiah-Chef Curran Murphy ist beileibe kein unbeschriebenes Blatt mehr. So konnte er bereits neben Jeff Waters bei Annihilator (u.a. auf Waking The Fury) und neben Jeff Loomis bei Nevermore (auf diversen Touren) zeigen, dass er sich nicht im Schatten der ganz großen Sechs-Saiten-Hexer verstecken muss. Um das endgültig und mit Nachdruck zu beweisen, serviert er uns nun das Debüt seiner eigenen Formation, bei der er endlich mal im Rampenlicht steht und nicht nur die zweite Klampfe bedient. Und diese Kapelle hat ohne Zweifel eure Aufmerksamkeit verdient.

Die Basis des Shatter Messiah-Sounds ist sicherlich Thrash Metal (sowohl moderner als auch traditioneller Ausrichtung), stilistisch festnageln lässt sich der Fünfer darauf aber noch lange nicht. Neben den zu erwartenden Parallelen zu Murphys Ex-Bands (Blasphemy Feeder klingt zum Beispiel stark nach Nevermore) finden sich hier moderne, heftige Stakkato-Riffgewitter, technische Kabinettstückchen, US Metal-Querverweise (man höre nur das grandiose, an Iced Earth erinnernde Drinking Joy) und sogar ein paar waschechte Death-Metal-Nackenschläge (Inflicted, Teile von Fear To Succeed). Dazwischen tummeln sich heftig Schädel spaltende Volltreffer wie Crucified Freedom, All Sainted Sinners oder der Titelsong und auch mal ein melodischer orientiertes, ebenso hochklassiges Teil wie Deny God. Die Gitarrenarbeit ist in allen Belangen Weltklasse: Egal, ob man nun die fetten Riffs, die (erwartungsgemäß) geilen Soli oder die sehr feinen zweistimmigen Harmonien nimmt – das hat alles Hand und Fuß. Mit Frontmann Greg Wagner (Breaker, ex-Archetype) hat man zudem jemanden hinterm Mikro stehen, der von Growls über Shouts und Clean-Vocals bis hin zu Halford-ähnlichen Screams alles drauf hat, was das Songmaterial erfordert. Andere Truppen müssen für solch eine gesangliche Vielfalt auch schon mal einen zweiten Fronter einstellen; Wagner schafft diesen Spagat jedoch scheinbar mühelos.

Im letzten Drittel (vielleicht sind vierzehn Tracks doch etwas zu viel des Guten) schwächelt die Scheibe leider ein wenig, was eine noch höhere Wertung verhindert. Ein starkes, abwechslungsreiches Metal-Album ohne Scheuklappen ist Never To Play The Servant trotzdem. Die Weichen für eine große Zukunft hat die Band also schon mal gestellt. Nun liegt es an euch, ob ihr auf diesen Zug aufspringt oder nicht.

Guitarist Curran Murphy is a former member of Nevermore who now has his own project Shatter Messiah in which his guitar virtuosity is given the opportunity to really shine. Never To Play The Servant by Shatter Messiah is a well-produced hardcore death metal album with melodic flare and plenty of technical briliance to boot. Shatter Messiah vocalist Greg Wagner has a style reminiscent of both Devin Townwsend of Strapping Young Lad and David Draiman of Disturbed and the lyrical themes deal with sacrifice and salvation, the cruelty and irony and of existence. Shatter Messiah is solid at all positions. The band is rounded out by Dusty Holt on guitar, Robert Falzano on drums and Ron Boisvert on bass. The songwriting is good and there is a nice balance of rhythmic variance and tempo throughout the album. All in all, Never To Play The Servant is a highly enjoyable listening experience.

«Never to Play the Servant» is the first full-length recorded by Shatter Messiah, the brain child of Curran Murphy who has worked live with Nevermore and Annihilator. For its personal project, Murphy has teamed up with ex Archetype screamer Greg Wagner, bassist Ron Boisvert, guitarist Dusty Holt and drummer Robert Falzano. This gathering of talented musicians plays fourteen tracks of catchy, retro American thrash heavy metal. As you can guess, the guitar work throughout «Never to Play the Servant» is simply impressive (both rhythm and lead). Greg Wagner’s performance (if you can endure these kind of clean – sometimes high-pitched vocals) is consistently efficient with songs such as «Hatred Divine», «Bad Blood» or «Disillusion» showcasing its wide register. If you like the American power thrash metal delivered by Nevermore or Annihilator (can stop thinking at both bands at the listening of this album) coupled with more obscure speed metal references (Laaz Rockit, Hexx, Griffin, Leatherwolf), then you would probably enjoy this «Never to Play the Servant».

An der Tatsache, daß Curran Murphy ein sehr begabter Gitarrist ist, wird wohl seit seinen Gastspielen bei ANNIHILATOR und NEVERMORE niemand zweifeln. Seine Fähigkeiten als Songwriter durfte Curran allerdings bislang noch nicht ausreichend unter Beweis stellen, weshalb er mit SHATTER MESSIAH seine eigene Band formiert hat. Musikalisch lassen sich die Einflüsse seiner ehemaligen Arbeitgeber nicht wirklich von der Hand weisen, Curran war offenbar sehr aufmerksam, wenn die Herren Waters oder Loomis Riffs für Songs aus dem Ärmel geschüttelt haben. Allerdings läßt sich der junge Mann musikalisch keineswegs limitieren und vermag sowohl Thrash Metal, aber auch Speed Metal oder traditionelle Power Metal-Songs zu komponieren. Aber auch Death Metal in getragener Form wird auf diesem Debut geboten und mitunter kommen gar Black Metal-Einflüsse zum Vorschein.
So weit, so gut, so abwechslungsreich von der Musik her. Was aber wäre ein stilistisch versierter und begabter Gitarrist und Komponist im Endeffekt ohne einen Sänger, der nicht einen ebenso facettenreichen Gesang anzubieten hätte? Richtig, nicht weiter erwähnenswert.
Doch auch diesbezüglich wissen SHATTER MESSIAH mit einem wahren Könner aufzuwarten: Der ehemalige ARCHETYPE- und langjährige BREAKER-Sänger Greg Wagner vermag auf »Never To Play The Servant« mit seiner mächtig eindrucksvollen Stimme und opulentem Stimmumfang zu brillieren. Egal, ob Greg eher traditionell US-Metal-lastig singt wie in ›Bad Blood‹, oder doch in rauhem Kreischton vorträgt (›Disillusion‹), man merkt dem Herren seine Fähigkeit in jeder Sekunde an. Seine Stimme klingt auch in eher gegurgeltem Ton natürlich, wie in der mächtig abgehenden Nummer ›Fear To Succed‹ und läßt keinen Zweifel aufkommen, es hier mit einem absoluten Könner und Vollprofi zu tun zu haben. Wer sich an Currans ehemaligen Brötchengebern erwärmen kann, zudem auf abwechslungsreich intonierten Metal steht und auch die Gesangskunst von Greg Wagner immer schon zu schätzen wußte, wird SHATTER MESSIAH lieben!

Brett, Alter! Brett! Curran Murphy, der schon als Tourgitarrist mit Nevermore und Annihilator unterwegs war, hat keinen Bock mehr, den Sklaven zu spielen. Mit SHATTER MESSIAH hat der äußerst fitte Klampfer (wer mit den Herren Loomis und Waters zocken kann, MUSS es draufhaben!) eine Band aus dem Boden gestampft, die zwar die Einflüsse seiner ehemaligen Arbeitgeber nicht verleugnet (bei ´Blasphemy Feeder´ und ´Bleed To Shadows´ sogar stolz präsentiert), aber dennoch als eigenständig genug durchgeht, um jegliche Plagiatsvorwürfe bereits im Keim zu ersticken. Einen mächtigen Beitrag zur Klasse von „Never To Play The Servant“ liefert darüber hinaus Sänger Greg „Wags“ Wagner (Breaker, ex-Archetype), der neben markerschütternden Screams und dem nötigen Volumen im Bassbereich auch noch mit einer sehr angenehmen Singstimme überrascht. Gebt euch Geschosse wie ´Crucify Freedom´, ´Hatred Divine´, ´Bad Blood´ oder ´Never To Play The Servant´, und auch ihr werdet verzückt dem neuen Metal-Messias huldigen!

It’s easy enough to draw comparisons between Shatter
Messiah and Nevermore, particularly since guitarist
Curran Murphy admits that his years working with Jeff
Loomis on the Nevermore stage rubbed off on him, but
that’s a cop out. Fact is, Shatter Messiah’s debut
does indeed tip the hat to Seattle’s chaos-bringers,
but there’s a whole hell of a lot more going on than
merely riding the band’s coattails. For a start,
vocalist Greg Wagner doesn’t confine himself to the
Dane/Halford school of shrieking bloody murder, going
for the more brutal thrash vocals just as often
(‘Hatred Divine’, ‘Inflicted’, ‘Disillusion’). He
doesn’t shy away from clean vocals or vocal harmonies
either (‘Deny God’, ‘All Sainted Sinners’, ‘Drinking
Joy’), making for an unexpectedly well-rounded listen
for something this bloody heavy. Musically the album
is a guitar-happy shredfest, much more thrash-oriented
than Nevermore or Annihilator (Murphy’s other pit stop
along the way) and focusing as much on groove as on
technical flash (and there’s plenty of both). Murphy
proves to be a monster both as a guitarist and
songwriter on Never To Play The Servant, justifying
his decision to make a go of it with a group of
virtual unknowns rather than wait for another signed
act to pick him up.

Bandleader Curran Murphy played technically demanding songs on numerous tours as a member of NEVERMORE (Politics Of Ecstasy and Dead Heart In A Dead World tours) and ANNIHILATOR (performing on the Waking The Fury, Double Live Annihilation and All For You albums and tours), Curran Murphy stepped out of the shadows of these acclaimed acts to form his own band, SHATTER MESSIAH. SHATTER MESSIAHs sound is an intense mixture combining Currans hardcore metal roots with classic thrash and power goth, resulting in compositions of over the top aggression and melodic skill.
To be able to complete the band he had in mind, Curran required a vocalist for SHATTER MESSIAH that could literally sing anything, from demonic growls to a melodious angelic choir, piercing highs to earth shattering lows. Just as Curran began to think that this vocalist did not exist, Greg Wags Wagner (BREAKER; ex-ARCHETYPE) auditioned for the position, and Curran knew that he had finally found the singer that would put no limits on his musical vision. The next piece that needed to be added to this complex musical puzzle was a drummer that could play the blazing, seemingly inhuman drums required for this band. Robert Falzano (a virtuoso hand picked by drum god Mike Mangini to replace him in ANNIHILATOR) was asked to join the band, along with whom came longtime friend and bass player Ron Boisvert. This is a short bio according the bands website! Personally im already a big fan & friend of singer Greg Wagner for years now and Greg pleased me with all his musical experiences & projects during the last 4 or 5 years.That was also the reason I already reviewed the bands demo in 2004 and I also tried to help the band finding a good recordlabel. Unfortunately that didnt work out but I was sure that sooner or later a label would pick up this high quality band! Well finally the German Dockyard label did. A very good choice when its up to me! When you expect music in the vein of Gregs older (progressive ) band (like Archetype); than I will have to disappoint you! Shatter Messiah plays a mix of old speed/thrashmetal but with a very modern touch! Bands to compare Shatter Messiah with are most likely; Nevermore, Pantera, Kragens but also some Annihilator. Offcourse you hear a lot of Annihilator elements back in their songs but dont expect a rip-off off this band! SM has found his own style in todays modern metal scene and I hope the band will make it because with their qualitys they deserve it! This is a damn good album; great production & great musicianship! Hope to see the band soon on stage in Europe!!

Avendo suonato come turnista per Annihilator e Nevermore, Curran Murphy non è certo lultimo arrivato sulla scena heavy del pianeta, e come lui il drummer Falzano (anchegli alla corte di Walker) e il vocalist Greg Wagner dei Breaker, ibrido Warrell Dane-Chuck Billy dagli screaming malati ai growl più grezzi.
Gli Shatter Messiah mettono in mostra proprio lesperienza e lamore del chitarrista (e dei suoi compagni) per due band che hanno rivoltato il thrash metal come un calzino e pur mantenendone alcune coordinate di base, lo hanno rivisitato secondo una sensibilità particolare (quella passionale dei Nevermore e quella ultra-elettrica degli Annihilator degli ultimi 3-4 dischi).
Il risultato, almeno da quanto possiamo intuire dal promo di quattro tracce (che nella tracklist posta sopra abbiamo spostato dal margine) a nostra disposizione, è piuttosto fresco e di impatto grazie anche ad una produzione (dal budget ricco pensiamo) chiara e potente che ne è un assoluto punto di forza, nonostante qualche traccia di chitarra troppo nascosta.
Sicuramente Never to play the servants è un disco complesso nella molteplicità delle influenze, ma nonostante ciò è anche apprezzabilmente omogeneo e catchy. Come si potrebbe altrimenti passare da un pesante andamento heavy ad una secca sfuriata old-school allinterno di uno stesso pezzo (Crucify Freedom) senza risultare dissonanti? Evidentemente ci vuole tanta intelligenza negli arrangiamenti oltre che un pò di fantasia nel songwriting, se non nellinventare qualcosa di originale almeno nellassemblare stili differenti di intendere il thrash, e queste sono qualità di cui gli Shatter Messiah dispongono.
Vi sorprenderà.

Sometimes weeks, even months may pass by when you don´t hear anything that is particularly interesting or ear-tickling to grab your immediate attention right after a couple of first intense spinnings (luckily it´s been a great year so far release-wise).

Shatter Messiah, a new band lead by Curran Murphy basically whos previous jobs have been in such bands as Nevermore and Annihilator – both touring – and recording-wise, was a band that threw my jaw open by a sheer amazement just in a few seconds only when I placed their debut record, NEVER TO PLAY THE SERVANT, into my CD –player. I honestly, didn´t expect to hear anything like this at all – not THIS damn good and huge sounding.

Shattered Messiah plays a straight-forward, very powerful, rich, challenging and a very Thrash –orientated, modern Heavy Metal that could be described sort of hybrid of such greats as Nevermore, Pain Museum, Iced Earth and Beyond Fear. However, don´t make yourself to think they could be a straight rip-off from any of those aforementioned bands as they are not. They just come from the same modern school of metal in which a technical, ambitious playing with all those crushing, neck-breaking riffs – added of course with a huge amount of plain natural talent, have been combined with smart melody lines (the same way like Iced Earth create and do them) and genius harmonies that only a small handful of metal bands are capable of producing these days (the ones already listed, plus bands like Mercenary and Metal Church come to my mind).

The carrying forces of Shatter Messiah, are undoubtedly Curran Murphy and his brilliant, ass-kicking guitar work in the band, and the band´s vocalist Greg Wagner (Breaker, ex-Archetype, etc.) whom true skills as one of the most powerful, wide-rang´ish metal vocalists, are unquestionable. At times Greg manages to sound very deceptive, like in “Never to Play” in which he sounds like an exact twin-brother of Warrel Dane (Nevermore) as far as his vocalism is concerned – and on the other hand, one can wonder how on earth he can actually come as close to the voice of David Wayne (Metal Church, R.I.P.) in All Sainted Sinners. It almost sounds like David has raised from the dead and done the vocals for this particular tune – not to forget how easily he even manages to reach the same register vocally in “Drinking Joy” of what Tim “Ripper” Owens has become known for. What a guy with so much awesome vocal power behind his lungs.

And co-incidence or not, but “Inflicted” reminds me ruthlessly of the Australian thrashers Hobbs Angel of Death´s song “House of Death”. Weird...

Without underestimating any of the other fellows in Shatter Messiah either, the rhythm guitarist Dusty Holt makes a perfect companionship to Curran with his 6-stringer, churning out ear-ripping riffs and clever rhythm changes that add a pummeling effect into the songs. As for the band´s skin pounder Robert Falzano, he has earned his most known spurs in Annihilator, and damn he´s very good behind his drum kit, too. Every fill, beat, etc. finds its target perfectly and yet somehow so easily - just like assassin´s bullet finds its victim´s heart. Ron, the 4-stringer possessor in the band, deserves a mention of praise also by his relaxed, but still tight and technical performance on the album.

As summa-summarum, NEVER TO PLAY THE SERVANT truly serves its listeners by all the 14 metal songs on it that scream for all those quality elements that are meant to be stamped as instant classic tag right after first listen already. It´s a safe bet we´ll hear a lot of more from them in the future.
