Thomen Stauch (Ex-BLIND GUARDIAN) ist zurück. Verstärkt um Piet Sielck (IRON SAVIOR) sowie Jens Carlsson und Emil Norberg (beide PERSUADER) hämmerten die Jungs hier praktisch ein typisches BLIND GUARDIAN Album zu „Imaginations From The Other Side“ Zeiten ein. Ja, für mich ist „Dreamland Manor“ der eigentliche Nachfolger und nicht „Nightfall ...“. Sänger Jens klingt sogar wie der Bruder von Hansi Kürsch. Besonders der Opener „Evil Eyes“, der abwechslungsreich, melodisch, hart und einfach nur absolut geil aus den Boxen dröhnt und das ruhige „Beyond Reality“ erhellen die Nacht in der Oper der blinden Wächter. Es müssen eben nicht 128 Spuren oder so sein. Auch „When Hell Awakes“ killt ohne Ende. Leider haben sich auch ein paar wenige Langweiler in Form von „Waltz Of The Demon“ und „Ghost Story“ eingeschlichen, aber die sind spätestens beim Nachfolger vergessen und stören die Nackenmuskulatur nur gering beim Kreisen. Savage Circus - Dreamland Manor

Somewhere in time, at the end of the summer of 2005 I found out about this existence of this band and I have to confess that my interest about it has been mainly aroused by the news that Savage Circus was Thommen Stauchs (former Blind Guardian drummer) band. Otherwise, I bet I wouldnt had got to listen to them, as I bet not many would had. This is the way it is in this melodic power-heavy metal world, there are about 8672 bands playing quite similar one to each other, European most of them- but I had the opportunity to see an Aussie band playing live something like that last year, so my assertion isnt generally valid. Still, out of these 8000 and whatever I was speaking about, only 200, lets say 300, manage to reach large audience. Well, whatever, somehow Savage Circus happened to be in my playlist and they even succeeded in not boring me. On the contrary , I must say Dreamland Manor is one of the albums that drew my full attention last year. But...as it was compulsory for this but to exist, beyond the catchy and easy to remind compositions, very inspired, very epical, prety speedy, beyond the real good fantasy lyrics- good and specially various- (Ive noticed this mania at power metallers to stick to a single subject till exhaustion and this is not Savage Circus case), so beyond all these good things, this albums has a big minus. Despite the fact that vocal parts arent made by Hansi Kursch, but Jens Carlsson of Persuader, with Piet Sielck of Iron savior as backing vocalist, Dreamland Manor cant fool any Blind Guardian fan. Its an Imaginations Through The Other Side meets a bit of Somewhere Far Beyond and some Nightfall in Middle Earth. Exactly the album I was expecting from Blind Guardian. Unfortunately- or maybe not- everyone is evolving in his own way, thus Blind Guardian evolved towards A Night At The Opera and I cant find myself in their evolution. And Thommen merely created another band to offer old Blind Guardian fans what they were waiting for...well, it doesnt have that glamour, it has only a pretty good vocalist, not an extraordinary one, it has an annoying balad-like song, Beyond Reality, absolutely wrongfully placed in the very middle of the album, to break its rhythm, but it also contains great songs like Evil Eyes, Ghost Story, Tomorrowland or Born Again By The Night, the latter having a great intro in the classical German speed style. I have to confess that if I wouldnt had known who the composer was, my mark at the compositional level would had been much lower under the accusation of plagiarism. Still, Dreamland Manor is indeed a great album for any fan of German power-metal *(even thought there are 2 Swedish guys in the band).

BLIND GUARDIAN Fans der alten Schule aufgepasst!!! Wem die Krefelder spätestens bei ihrem letzten Album A Night at the Opera zu soft oder zu experimentell geworden sind und sich die alten Tage zurück sehnt, ist hier genau richtig. Wie in deren besten Zeiten mit Götter-Alben wie Tales from the Twilight World, Somewhere far beyond oder Imaginations from the other Side (alle 3 bisher unerreicht!) machen sich hier SAVAGE CIRCUS, die neue Hauptband des Ausnahme Schlagzeugers Thomen the Omen Stauch zu Werke, das es nur eine Freude ist. Bereits auf dem Rock Hard Festival hatte man das Vergnügen in einige Songs vorab reinhören zu dürfen, was bereits damals sehr vielversprechend klang. Wenn man nun zu Songs wie dem mega genialen Opener Evil Eyes, dem darauf folgenden Between the Devil and the Seas, It - The Gathering, dem ruhigeren Beyond Reality oder dem hypermelodischen Ghost Story lauscht, könnte man fats heulen vor Freude. Im übrigen wird Thomen hier von Piet Silck (IRON SAVIOUR) sowie Emil Norberg und Jens Carlsson unterstützt, wobei letztgenannter sogar verdammte Ähnlichkeit mit Hansi Kürsch hat, was den Gesang betrifft. Eins steht fest: Fans von oben genannten Alben müssen sich Dreamland Manor kaufen!

Savage Circus, cest le nouveau groupe de Thomen Stauch. Le légendaire batteur de Blind Guardian, depuis quil a quitté ces derniers, na pas perdu son temps et a recruté les musiciens pour jouer... du Blind Guardian! Mais du Blind Guardian dil y a dix ans, comme si Thomen sétait engouffré dans une faille spatio-temporelle pour revenir à lépoque de Tales from the Twilight World et de Somewhere in time.
En plus, il a recruté les musiciens quil fallait pour jouer ce style de musique. Son pote Piet Sielck (à qui il avait déjà donné un coup de main à une époque en faisant les parties de batterie du deuxième album dIron Savior) sest joint à lui et assure donc la guitare, la production, et même le contrat discographique puisque cest lun des dirigeants du label Dockyard1. Il a présenté à Thomen les musiciens de Persuader, qui lont aussitôt convaincu. Et pour cause, Jens Carlsson est peut-être le chanteur dont la voix est la plus proche de celle de Hansi Kürsch. Cest bien pratique lorsque lon veut jouer du Blind Guardian, non? Et le guitariste Emil Norberg a également un jeu assez proche de celui dAndré Olbrich. Ces deux Suédois ont donc été rapidement engagés par les Allemands. Losmose semble avoir pris, car le résultat est assez convaincant. Cest du pur Blind Guardian du début des années 90, quand le groupe avait trouvé son style mais faisait des compos certes très travaillées mais toujours très directes. Dailleurs, un certain nombre de ces chansons avaient été composées par Thomen pour le prochain album de Blind Guardian mais navaient pas été retenues. Lorsquil a quitté le groupe, il avait donc pas mal de matériel sous la main quil a pu exploiter rapidement. Ca donne donc du bon speed metal allemand, aux riffs en béton, avec une voix agressive et éraillée, de bonnes harmonies de guitare, et un batteur phénoménal au style immédiatement identifiable. Piet Sielck a même fait un effort: on ne trouve aucune réminiscence dIron Savior sur Dreamland manor. Ni dans les riffs, ni dans le son! Peut-être un peu dans les choeurs, et encore... Cest tellement rare sur les albums quil a produits quil fallait le signaler! En fait, la production est assez similaire à celle de Somewhere far beyond, avec plus de choeurs et darrangements. Mais Dreamland manor ne parvient cependant pas à se hisser au niveau de ce chef doeuvre. Il ny a pourtant rien à jeter sur cet album. Les compos sont de très bonne facture, bien travaillées, assez variées et des titres comme Waltz of the demon, It-the gathering ou Tomorrowland sont indiscutablement des tueries. Mais elles ne sont pas non plus au niveau des standards de Blind Guardian. Elles feraient plutôt office de bonus tracks, en fait. En plus, si le chant est très bon, Jens Carlsson na pas un registre vocal aussi varié que celui de Hansi Kürsch. Son timbre en est très proche, mais techniquement, il reste quand même inférieur à son modèle. Certes, la barre est placée particulièrement haut et il ne faut pas oublier que Dreamland manor nest que le premier album de Savage Circus. Mais personne na obligé le groupe à faire ce que Blind Guardian faisait il y a dix ans! Alors pour éviter les comparaisons systématiques, et sans trop sen éloigner non plus (car jai beau être critique, ce quil y a sur cet album reste quand même du tout bon!), ce serait une bonne chose quils cherchent à avoir leur propre son. Mais dun autre côté, avec Nightfall in Middle Earth et surtout A night at the Opera, Blind Guardian sest quelque peu éloigné de ce style, et Savage Circus ne sonne absolument pas comme le Blind Guardian actuel. Ceux qui napprécient pas trop cette évolution devraient se retrouver complètement dans le nouveau groupe de Thomen. De par son passé, il a toute légitimité pour jouer la musique quil pratiquait avec son ancien groupe sans que lon puisse crier au plagiat. Certains seront cependant choqués par la ressemblance. Mais après tout, Gamma Ray a commencé de cette manière par rapport à Helloween, Heading for tomorrow étant la continuité des Keeper of the Seven Keys. La différence, cest que Kai Hansen avait fait justement dans la continuité de son groupe dorigine. Là, il ne sagit pas vraiment de continuité puisque Thomen Stauch fait un flashback de dix ans en arrière. Ca nempêche que Dreamland manor est lun des meilleurs albums de heavy allemand sorti en 2005.

Eikös maailmassa ole myös sen tyyppisiä kasveja, että kun niistä leikkaa vaikka oksan pois ja laittaa maahan, niin tuolla toimenpiteellä saa samanlaisen puun aikaiseksi? No Savage Circus on musiikkimaailman versio tällaiselle ilmiölle. Blind Guardianin neljäsosa, rumpali Thomen Stauch jätti aina muuttumattomana pysyneen yhtyeen jäsenistömn yllätyksellisesti 20 vuoden jälkeen, viime keväänä. Kyseessä olivat kuulemma näkemyserot siitä miltä uusi materiaali kuulostaa. Kun ensimmäisen kerran kuulin viime elokuussa Savage Circusin Evil Eyes - kappaleen, olin ihan varma että se on uutta Blind Guardiania!

Kerrataanpa tosiasiat. Thomen soittaa aivan kuten Blind Guardianissakin, ehkä paikoitellen vähän suoraviivaisemmin. Kitaristi Piet Sielck kopioi täysin Andre Olbrichin tavan soittaa kitaramelodioita ja jos koskaan on kuullut kenenkään voivan kuulostaa Blind Guardianin laulajalta, Hansi Kürschilta, niin se on Persuaderin Jens Carlsson! Koko poppoo on Sanctuaryn bisnessotkujen jälkeen löytänyt kotinsa Pietin vastaperustetun levymerkin, Dockyard 1:n uumenista. Tällainen keitos on siis luvassa. Itse asiassa koko bändi kuulostaa varmasti näin luettuna hyvinkin tylsältä ja mielikuvituksettomalta idealta. Pelko on kuitenkin turha, sillä ensinnäkin albumin materiaali ja tuotanto ovat silkkaa a-ryhmää. Toiseksi, ei tämä Blind Guardian -apinointi ole lainkaan väärillä perusteilla tehty, onhan Thomenilla täysi oikeus ko. yhtyeen soundiin ja hän on varmasti vaikuttanut paljon sen syntyyn. Mielenkiintoisen asiasta tekee se, että lähtiessään Blind Guardianista Thomen valitteli, että yhtye on liukunut liian kauas alkuperäisestä soundistaan. Nyt saamme siis ilmeisesti harvinaislaatuisesti kurkistaa vaihtoehtoiseen historiaan: missä Blind Guardian menisi nyt, jos tyyli olisi tuolla 90-luvun puolivälissä vielä säilytetty vanhan kaltaisena.

Dreamland Manor -albumi tarjoaa minulle eniten yhtymäkohtia Immaginations from the Other Side -levyyn. Ihan puhtaita akustisia vetoja ei toki ole, mutta kappaleiden rakenne ja kertosäkeet tuovat mieleen kyseisen lätyn monta kertaa. Piet Sielck on tehnyt hyvää miksaustyötä, vaikka totuttuun tapaan hänen kädenjälkensä on jälleen kovin kliinistä ja tietty orgaanisuus loistaa poissaolollaan. Piet on muutenkin todella kovassa vedossa luodessaan tutut queenmaiset multiharmoniset kitaranvongutukset ja vastatessaan yhdessä Ralf Köhlerin kanssa elämääkin mahtipontisemmista kuoroista. Yksittäisistä kappaleista on vaikea poimia niitä parhaimpia. Evil Eyes ja Waltz of the Demon hivelevät omaa mieltäni näistä eniten. Tämä yhtye täytyy kyllä nähdä livenä, sillä kovatasoinen ja ammattimainen pumppu ainakin albumilla tuntuu soittavan. Ehkä pikkuisen muuten niin loistavan levyn arvoa voi laskea se tosiasia, että innovaatio ja soundi eivät ole kuitenkaan mitään ihan uusia juttuja - johan tämänkuuloinen bändi teki ensimmäisen levynsä vuonna 1989.

I downloaded the online single for Dreamland Manor, with Evil Eyes and Ghost Story.

My first reactions were, Well, this is something you dont hear everyday. The riffs and solos remind me of Somewhere Far Beyond-era Blind Guardian, which is good, since I love that album.

The production is excellent, the rough vocals work with the smooth (but heavy) guitars and the atmosphere is so... well, its just pleasantly dark. ;)

Great job! Look forward to hearing the entire album!

Je tomu několik let zpáky, kdy se BLIND GUARDIAN (dále jen BG) rozhodli k radosti svých fanoušků začít připravovat skladby pro své nové album. Tady někde začíná nový příběh dnes už bývalého bubeníka BG. I on se ve svém domácím studiu jal komponovat skladby, kterými plánoval obohatit novou desku speed metalových mohykánů. Jenže, co čert nechtěl po dokončení skladby ani tak nepřipomínali dnešní BG, ale staré dobré časy definované alby „Tales Trom The Twilight World“ či „Somewhere Fay Beyond“. V Thomenově nitru opětovně zaplál mladistvý plamínek a napsal několik dalších skladeb. Poté přišel zlomový okamžik. Thomen požádal svého dlouholetého kamaráda Pieta Sielcka ( producent a hlava projektu IRON SAVIOR) o radu co dál. Piet znalý hudební branže upozornil Thomena na švédské opovrhované seskupení PERSUADER. Po vyposlechnutí jejich tvorby bylo jasno. Thomen lišácky vycucnul z PERSUADER to nejlepší, zpodobněné dvojící Jens Carlsson (zpěv) a Emil Norberg (kytara). Trojici následně doplňuje sám Piet (basa, kytara) . S touto sestavou v zádech již nebyl problém podepsat smlouvu s mladičkým ambiciózním labelem Dockyard1. Cesta pro velký návrat zavřeného vichru BG prostřednictvím SAVAGE CIRCUS byla otevřena. Když nadešel den rozhřešní a v mých rukou se objevila placka s nápisem SAVAGE CIRCUS – „Dreamland Manor“ , byl jsem nesmírně rozrušený. Vše ovšem zmizelo jediným stiskem tlačítka play. Žádné intro, žádné oťukávání. Okamžitě se na mě vychrlila nefalšovaná přímočará speed metalová smršť. Tenhle herní styl je naprosto nezaměnitelný. Thomenova partička SAVAGE CIRCUS vykopala album „Dreamland Manor“ tam kde BG zakopali své, již jmenované, z mého pohledu nejlepší počiny a nic nešetří moje ušní bubínky. Razantní Thomenovy bicí, nezaměnitelný zpěv, který zvládají snad jen dva lidé na této planetě ( pokud teda nekuje nějaký eskymák pikle za zdmi svého iglů) a obrovské kytarové nasazení dvojice Sielck – Norberg. Toť otvírák alba „Evil Eyes“. Tohle nejde si hned při prvním poslechu nezamilovat. Ve dvojce „Between The Devil In The Sea“ SAVAGE CIRCUS je znát mírné zpomalení, které je vykoupeno větší agresivitou. Z každého tónu je cítit, jak do toho všichni jdou naplno a nechávají na desce kus srdíčka. Trojka „Waltz Of Demon“ dostala do výbavy nádherný baladický začátek. Ten dává vyniknout Jensonovu hlasu, který vyzpívává pod kůži se zažírající táhlý refrén „Fire and Ice“ strhávající do mlýnice Thomenových kopáků. Následuje „těžká“ čtyřka „Tommorowland“ a po ní pětka „It – The Gardering“, jenž depeší SAVAGE CIRCUS pro všechny posmutnělé, že melodický speed v našich srdcích nikdy nezemře. Šestá pečeť nese příznačný název „Beyond Reality“ . Fantastická balada, které dominuje Jensenův hlas …. Je to jako něco z jiného světa a hlavě se pomalu rýsuje myšlenka směřující k okamžiku, kdy mi z úst sklouznou slova „I am lost in the black chamber….“ Mrazivé záchvěvy se spřáhly s mým tělesným ochlupením a pořádají jednu mexickou vlnu za druhou … Nemužu se toho pocitu nabažit …Následují ještě speedové „nátěry“ „When Hell Awakes“ , „Ghost Story“ a album uzavírá „Born Again By The Night“. Pánové klobouk dolů tohle je skvělá práce. Thomen svým odchodem z BG učinil to nejleší co mohl. Nenechal se spoutat slávou a odvážně udělal krok do nejistoty, která mu poskytla prostor k seberealizaci. Odměnou mu budiž můj dík a uznání . Současně jsem rád že nezůstávám na světě jediný kdo miluje hudbu prezentovanou BG na počátku jejich dráhy.

I believe that savage Circus is a namd you must have listened to many times lately! Thats very natural cause its Thomens new band. Who is Thomen? The former BLIND GUARDIAN drummer. However, Savage Circus existed before Thomens departure from his previous legendary band and actually in the beginning he intended to keep this band as a project, but the situations forced Thomen to change his original plans. Now with Savage Circus being his main band and along with the help of well known musicians like Jens Carlsson, Emil Norberg (PERSUADER) and Piet Sielck (IRON SAVIOR), he is ready to conquer the fans of European power metal! Especially the friends of BLIND GUARDIAN(count me in!) wont be disappointed at all!!!! Dreamland Manor could be described in a few words as the link between Imaginations From The Other Side and Nightfall In Middle Earth. OK, some friends of IRON SAVIOR might also find some touches from this band as well and in specific in the songs Tomorrowland and When Hell Awakes. I believe that with this debut Mr. Thomen shows that he didnt agree with the path that BLIND GUARDIAN chose with their last album... So, if you are not an originality freak and you want to listen to some great a la BLIND GUARDIAN tunes, then this album will be a perfect companion to you. As for me, I admit that I never was an opera fan, so Im going to stay at the moment with Savage Circus manor...

ie Bestürzung war groß, als es im April diesen Jahres hieß, dass Schlagzeuger Thomen Stauch und eine der erfolgreichsten deutschen Speed-, Power- und Progressive Metal Bands nach fast 22-jähriger Zusammenarbeit von nun an getrennte Wege gehen würden – und mindestens ebenso hoch waren die Erwartungen für welches andere Projekt es sich seiner Ansicht nach lohnen würde, seine Bandkameraden und Fans zurück zu lassen. Die Antwort darauf muss an dieser Stelle wohl heißen: Savage Circus. Genau auf diese Formation, bestehend aus dem bereits erwähnten Ex-Blind Guardian Drummer Stauch, dem Iron Savior Axtschwinger Piet Sielck und den beiden Mitgliedern der Power Metal Kombo Persuader namens Jens Karlsson und Emil Norberg, richtet sich dieser Tage das Ohr aller jener, die in Blind Guardian etwas mehr als eine Band aus vielen gesehen haben, denn nun steht das Debutalbum der vier Jungs ins Haus mit dem Titel „Dreamland Manor“.

Also heißt es CD in den Player und die Ohren gespitzt und nach einer kurzen Stunde kann man getrost behaupten: „Das war wieder mal ein spitzen Blind Guardian Album – und jetzt bitte Savage Circus.“ So oder ähnlich wird es den meisten ergangen sein, nachdem sie die beiden, schon im Vorfeld veröffentlichten Track „Evil Eyes“ und „Ghost Story“ aus ihren Boxen schallen ließen. O.K., ich hatte mich ja bereits darauf eingestellt, dass Thomen, The Omen nach nicht ganz einem viertel Jahrhundert Guardian kein Black Metal Album eintrommeln würde und auch dass Piet Sielck ehr dem schwerem und kraftvollen, als dem toten Metall zugeneigt ist. Was ich jedoch nicht erwartete, war eine 1 zu 0,95 Kopie der Krefelder, die rein der musikalischen Einordnung zu Folge kurz nach der „Imagination From the other Side“ Platte hätte statt finden können. Was hier sich in den dominierenden aggressiven Gesangspassagen, vor allem durch die Unterstützung der Backing Vocals, so verflucht nach Hansi Kürsch anhört ist in Wahrheit der Schwede Jens Karlsson und auch die Gitarrenläufe, die beispielsweise in der hervorragenden Uptempo-Nummer mit Mitsingrefrain namens „When Hell Awaits“ sehr stark nach dem Gespann Siepen/Olbrich klingen, stammen nicht aus deren Saiten.

Ist dieser erste Eindruck erst mal abgeklungen, merkt man schnell, dass Savage Circus trotz aller Auffälligkeiten eigene Songs spielen, von denen nicht ein einziger nach einem schon existierenden Stück der Guardians klingt. Vor allem in den langsamen Momenten der „Dreamland Manor“ merkt man deutlich, dass hier keine Coverband spielt, sondern andere sehr fähige Musiker an Werk sind. So schlägt zum Beispiel in „Beyond Reality“, einer wirklich starken Ballade, die Stimme des Vokalisten ganz andere Töne an, die diesen ständig im Hinterkopf schwirrenden Gedanken schon fast vergessen lassen.

Letztendlich bleibt zu sagen, dass dieses Debüt ein wirklich starkes geworden ist, das mit neun außerordentlich starken, eingängigen und abwechslungsreichen Nummern und einer angemessenen Spielzeit vollkommen zu überzeugen weiß. Einziger Wehmutstropfen ist und bleibt am Schluss die fehlende Eigenständigkeit und die Frage nach dem, was die restlichen Bandkollegen der Hörerschaft demnächst servieren werden, was diesen Schritt rechtfertigte.

Als die Nachricht in der Presse die Runde machte, dass sich Thomen Stauch von Blind Guardian getrennt hat, dachte ich erst an einen schlechten Scherz, da ja mal wieder die berühmten musikalischen Differenzen als Grund genannt wurden.

Doch als ich dann die CD einlege und den Play Kopf betätige, kann ich dies voll und ganz nachvollziehen. Auf „Dreamland Manor“ verarbeitet Thomen eigentlich das Material, was bei seiner ehemaligen Band hätte nach „Tales From The Twighlight World“ oder auch „Somewhere Far Beyond“ hätte kommen sollen.

Savage Circus präsentieren frischen und frei von der Leber weg ballernden Speed Metal der Güteklasse A wie z.B. der Übertrack „Evil Eyes“. Dazu kommen aber auch richtig bombastische Nummern und Power Hymnen ohne Ende - da lacht das Metaller Herz mehr als nur einmal. Da aber Thomen nicht alleine so eine Band aufziehen kann, hat er sich mit dem Iron Savior Gitarristen Piet Sielck und den schwedischen Jungs Emil Norberg, auch an der Gitarre, und Sänger Jens Karlsson zwei Mann der Band Perauder an den Start geholt. Und auch das ist passend, klingt Jens Karlsson doch fast so wie Blind Guardian Frontmann Hansi Kürsch.

Ein anderes Beispiel für das absolut geniale Schaffen von Savage Circus ist das obergeniale Stück „When Hell Awaits“, ein Dampfhammer aus Speed und Melodie der phantastischen Art. „Between The Devil And The Seas“ ist zwar auch eine teilweise flotte Nummer, besticht aber durch bombastischen Refrain ohne Ende. Bei „It- The Gathering“ holt Thomen die knallende Doublebass Keule raus und mit den treibenden Riffs von Piet und und Emil mutiert das ganze Stück auch zu einem Knüller. Mit „Beyond Reality“ lassen es Savage Circus aber mal etwas ruhiger angehen und man kann von einer traditionellen Halbballade sprechen, die so richtig gut unter die Haut geht. Mit „Ghost Story“ folgt dann eine richtig melodische Midtempo Nummer, die musikalisch auch mit ein paar technischen Passagen versiert ist. Das Ende einer Top Scheibe macht dann „Born Again By The Night“, welches ein Mix aus bombastischen Parts mit melodischem Speed bietet.

Mit dieser Scheibe werden Savage Circus binnen kürzester Zeit einen Megaerfolg feiern können, denn das Album ist Power pur und mit dem oberfetten Sound ein absolutes Metal Highlight, dazu hat man mit weit über 50 Minuten Spielzeit auch noch eine Menge Musik zu hören, die immer wieder zum Anhören animiert.

Da kann man nur hoffen, dass es auch bald eine Tour geben wird, um dieses Meisterwerk live zu erleben.

Guardian-Fans aufgepaßt! Savage Circus nennt sich die neue Band um Ex-Blind Guardian-Drummer Thomen The Omen Stauch. Dieser war vor einigen Monaten völlig überraschend bei den Gardinen ausgestiegen, weil persönliche Differenzen eine weitere ehrliche Zusammenarbeit unmöglich gemacht hätten. Aber auch musikalisch hatte Thomen einige Probleme mit der Wandlung Guardians zum immer progressiver, orchestraler und mehrspuriger werdenden Sound, was die Entscheidung für einen Ausstieg noch einmal erleichterte. Mit Piet Sielck (Iron Savior) und den beiden Persuader-Musikern Jens und Emil war jedoch schnell eine neue Band geformt und mit Savage Circus der passende Name für die Formation gefunden.

Musikalisch geboten wird auf Dreamland Manor, und jetzt wirds interessant, Songmaterial ganz im Guardian-Stil der mittleren Schaffensphase. Acht der neun Songs gehen straight nach vorne los und erinnern lediglich durch ein paar Chöre und ganz gelegentlichen orchestralen Einsatz an ein Album wie Nightfall.... Beeindruckend ist vor allen Dingen, daß der Sound Guardians hier wirklich bis ins letzte Detail adaptiert wurde. Gitarrenverzerrungen, Drumsound und selbst der Gesang schallen herrlich Guardian-like aus der Anlage und lassen eine kleine Freudenträne über die Wange Eures Redakteurs kullern, der sich in einem Anflug von Jugendlichkeit plötzlich 10 Jahre in der Zeit zurück versetzt fühlt. Kopie! Kopie! werdet ihr jetzt möglicherweise einwerfen. Das beste Argument was gegen diesen Plagiats-Vorwurf spricht hat Thomen jedoch in unserem Interview mit ihm selbst genannt: Der Drummer war immerhin 22 Jahre lang Bestandteil Blind Guardians, hat den Sound mitkreiert und sicherlich ein Recht darauf, ihn auch weiterhin zu spielen. Gerade dann, wenn ihn Guardian selbst nicht mehr für ihre heutige Musik aufgreifen. Einzig die schöne Ballade Beyond Reality fällt hier schließlich auch ein bißchen aus dem Guardian-Schema, ist aber nichtsdestotrotz ein ergreifender Song, selbst wenn die verwendeten Akkorde ein wenig ausgelutscht klingen. Daumen hoch!

Abgerundet wird Dreamland Manor durch eine gute Produktion aus dem Hause Sielck, die angenehm anders klingt als die Iron Savior/Paragon/etc.-Sachen, sowie ein schönes Coverartwork von Markus Mayer. Für Guardian-Fans der Tales.../ Somewhere.../Imaginations...-Phase sollte es darum Pflicht sein, diese Scheibe beim ersten Sichtkontakt im CD-Laden zu verhaften. Hier macht ihr definitiv keinen Fehler!

SAVAGE CIRCUS, so heißt die neue Band des ex-BLIND GUARDIAN Drummers Thomas Thomen Stauch. Musikalisch steckt dahinter die ehrlichste Form von BLIND GUARDIAN, die wir seit 1995 nicht mehr oft zu Gehör bekommen haben. Im Prinzip ist es genau jenes Album, das ich als Nachfolger meiner Lieblingsscheibe Imaginations From The Other Side erwartet habe. Ein Album voll unbändiger Energie, Power und Dynamik - sprich also Heavy Metal, wie ihn Hansi & Co. zuletzt wohl aus den Augen verloren hatten. Alle Fans der früheren BLIND GUARDIAN sollten daher ganz doll die Ohren spitzen!!
Thomen hat sich für dieses Projekt Emil Norberg (g.) und Jens Carlsson (vo.), beide von der schwedischen Power Metal Band PERSUADER (großartige Band im Fahrwasser von BLIND GUARDIAN!), sowie seinen langjährigen Freund Piet Sielck (IRON SAVIOR) für Rhythmus Gitarre und Bass geangelt. Die meisten Songs sind recht schnell und wissen durch unbändige Double Bass Drums, gesetzte Chorusse, scharfkantige Gitarren und ausdrucksvollen Gesang zu gefallen. All diese Attribute kannte man bislang auch von den früheren BLIND GUARDIAN-Veröffentlichungen. Uns wird hier eine solide Performance geboten und augenscheinlich steht Thomen der Wechsel nicht schlecht zu Gesicht. Einige Chorusteile erinnern mich unglaublich an IRON SAVIOR (wer erinnert sich schon daran, dass Thomen das erste Album von IRON SAVIOUR mit eingespielt hat?). In meinen Augen ist das Ergebnis ein gelungener Mix aus BLIND GUARDIAN und IRON SAVIOR, den man besser nicht hätte machen können.
Diejenigen, die auf die früheren BLIND GUARDIAN stehen, sollten die CD auf jeden Fall antesten. Und die Frage, warum Thomen BLIND GUARDIAN den Rücken gekehrt hat, beantwortet dieses Album im Übrigen ganz automatisch.

Als wären die letzten (zweifellos erfolgreichen Jahre) mit Blind Guardian nicht gewesen, haut Ex-Drummer Thomen Stauch mit seinen neuen Weggefährten (u.a. Piet Sielck) ein Hammeralbum in bester Somewhere Far Beyond- oder Tales From The Twilight World-Tradition raus. Losgelöst vom permanenten Zwang, immer orchestralere und epischere Alben zu produzieren, ist Dreamland
Manor eine Rückbesinnung auf die Anfangstage der blinden Wächter.
Von hammerharten, treibenden Doublebass-Einsätzen und messer-scharfen Riffkaskaden getragen, bieten die neun Songs Power-Speed-Metal vom Allerfeinsten. Natürlich riecht, schmeckt, schwitzt jede Sekunde des
Albums (nach) Blind Guardian, doch gerade diese unverhohlene Direktheit macht diesen Silberling so einmalig. Hier gibt es einfach nur schweinegeile Mucke, die permanent auf der Überholspur ist und einem nur mit der Halbballade ´Beyond Reality´ eine kleine Verschnaufpause gönnt. Ansonsten sind hammerharte Speed-Bolzen wie ´It-The Gathering´ oder ´Evil Eyes´ mit ihren treibenden Grooves, saugeilen Chören und einmaligen Melodien Bestandteile eines der großartigsten Debüts der letzten Jahre und schon jetzt auf dem besten
Wege, SAVAGE CIRCUS zum next big thing zu machen. Man muss kein Prophet sein, um der Band einen ähnlich kometenhaften Aufstieg wie Masterplan zu prognostizieren.

Är man avhoppad trummis i ett av världens största heavy/power metalband och sedan startar upp ett nytt följe med samma inriktning som det förra, fast med ögonen riktat mot gruppens tidigare utgåvor, samt anlitar en strupgapare som påminner så till den milda grad om det förra gängets sångare - när han var yngre - att man nästan kan tro att det är han som sjunger, riskerar onekligen originaliteten att försvinna för den nya orkestern. Heter dock trummisen Thomas Stauch, har lirat i Blind Guardian och anlitar Jens Carlsson från Persuader, kan resultatet inte bli annat än lyckat. Vem sjutton bryr sig om originalitet när de leverer sådana här musikpärlor?

Musiken andas väldigt mycket Blind Guardian, parallellerna till Persuader går inte heller bortse från och även små vindstötar från det germanska metalllokomotivet Iron Savior kan skönjas i ljudbilden. Just den sistnämnda kopplingen utgörs av det faktum att ledaren och hjärnan bakom nämnda grupp står för både produktion, bakgrundssång samt traktering av den fyrsträngade. Mannen heter Piet Sielck och hans kompisgemenskap med Thomen gjorde det fullt naturligt för honom att hoppa in i bandet.

Dreamland Manor är för de själar som tycker om Blind Guardian under vilken tidsepok som helst eller de som tycker att Krefeld-bandet mjäkade till sig efter Imaginations From The Other Side-plattan. Hur som helst skänker bandet oss fullständigt harmoniska elaka vackra melodier, blixtrande solon, pampiga refränger och Thomen själv presenterar ett härligt varierande trumspel. Jens sjunger grymt bra och i It - The Gathering när vokalisten, accapella, utstöter orden No loss of memories, protecting you no more smälter mitt hårdrockshjärta. Emil Norberg får här lite mer utrymme för sitt gitarrspelande än i Persuader och det märks att han brås på brorsan Nils Norberg från Nocturnal Rites. Albumslutaren Born Again By The Night är ett perfekt avslut på ett perfekt album.

I guess that Blind Guardian ought to be a band familiar to all of the readers of Metal Covenant, and that their drummer left the band due to musical differences might also be known to most Blind Guardian fans. Thomen Stauch wanted to go back and create more fast hitting metal again and teamed up with Piet Sielck (Iron Savior and well known producer) which introduced him to Swedish band Persuader that many refer to as Blind Guardian clones even if they deserve a better description. So along with Jens Carlsson on vocals and Emil Norberg on guitar the line-up of Savage Circus was complete and can you take a guess on how it might sound?

It gets obvious pretty fast that Thomen strife to get back to the fast paced and aggressive power metal and that his about twenty years in Blind Guardian have made its mark on the songwriting. Savage Circus sound like the mid-era of Blind Guardian and the fast-paced songs that are found on albums like Somewhere Far Beyond (1991), Imaginations From The Other Side (1995) and Nightfall In Middle Earth (1998). The structure of the songs are recognized and arrangements with playful guitar leads, breaks, harmonies and backing vocals are all there and bare the same mark as with the predecessors.

The vocal similarities between Jens Carlsson and Hansi Kursch is strikingly, and even if Jens voice is harsher you cannot overlook the resemblance. Piet Sielck has done the producing and done it well as he has made the album sound more full-toned than the productions on the albums from Persuader and Iron Savior for instance, which he also has produced. Savage Circus has managed to create head on thrashy power metal with catchy melodies and you can hear traces of Iron Savior as well as Gamma Ray in many guitar parts giving them somewhat of an own sound even if it is very close to you-know-what band.

The drumming is absolutely splendid as always from Thomen, you get some double-keg rhythms and furious beating that is too die for. And all of the guys in the band have really put an effort into this because it sounds great from every direction, there is a great amount of powerful energy and joy here that shines through. Savage Circus pull out the parts that I love the most from Blind Guardian and as a long time BG fan I have loved the progression they have made but I have also missed and found the faster and thrashier parts being to few, but with Savage Circus that urge gets satisfied. So how good is Savage Circus really? Better than Blind Guardian? In general no, better in some aspects but mostly they will have to live with trailing their origin. But compared with Persuader this new band takes one step further as this is as close to the original you can get and this is practically or even just as good as a new Blind Guardian album.

People who like IFTOS will be in for one big surprise! The moment I listened to Evil Eyes, I was transported back in 1995. Soaring vocals, frantic and precise drumming, great guitar melodies, everything is there! Album of the Year for sure even though the competition is strong!
